The Harlem Globetrotters are hitting town in June, bringing back memories of Dad taking me and my brother to see them as a kid. You can check out The Harlem Globetrotters at the TSB Stadium, on the 28 May 2013.
Herbert “Flight Time” Lang @datrotter4 is coming to New Plymouth to promote the event, so we’ve replaced the lamps and made sure the balls are pumped up in the basketball machine at the cinema.
Sure, he can do this:
but can he do this?
(I can’t do either but don’t tell Flight Time – I’ve challenged him to a game on Twitter :))
@datrotter4 When you’re in New Plymouth I will challenge you to a game on the basketball machine at the cinema.

Hawera’s controversial Push Bike Pub Crawl has gone full cycle with the South Taranaki District Council officially riding pillion for this year’s event.
And as any good passenger would do, the council is pulling its weight by booking London-based Kiwi alternative rockers I Am Giant for a concert to coincide with the end of the December 17 ride.
For the last two years, Hawera police had tried to stop the event, which had grown from a ride attended by a few hundred locals to one pulling in thousands from around the country.
The event was regularly marred with boorish behaviour and drunkenness but police struggled to stop it, hindered by the fact it often had no official organiser.
Council’s decision to come in on the act is acknowledgment the ride cannot be beaten and so must be joined.
I Am Giant were booked as headline act at the inaugural ALT Fest at the Hawera showgrounds after the council researched what sort of music pub crawlers would appreciate.
“We thought, if we were going to do this we’re going to do it properly,” council chief executive Craig Stevenson said.
It turns out council’s economic and tourism manager Phil Waite had his finger on the pulse of what sort of rock band would fit the predominantly younger demographic.
“He did most of the work on pulling it together and researching it,” Mr Stevenson said.
“Hopefully we’ll get a really good crowd in there and bring a few people from out of the district.”
To minimise how much ratepayers will have to pay, the ticket price has been set at $27.
People can bring their own alcohol into the R16 event but the amount and use will be controlled.
The pub crawl is an unofficial 30-year-old ride held on the Saturday before Christmas.
The rock-fest is the planned gathering after the ride in which riders cycle from Hawera to Normanby and back.
After police attempts to shut the bike ride down in recent years, the concept of a controlled gathering at the end is seen as a way to continue the ride.

Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising, I Put a Spell on You & Lookin’ out My Back Door Set to rock the TSB Bowl of Brooklands with Creedence Clearwater Revisited in February
![]() |
They play all the classic, with the same passion as the original CCR |
The band, formed in 1995 by former Creedence Clearwater Revival drummer Doug “Cosmo” Clifford and bassist Stu Cook, (Creedence Clearwater Revival without the Fogerty brothers)
New Plymouth District Council events manager Brent Thawley said it was great to have the band locked in, and also to see events coming back to the Bowl.
“This is a summer tradition to have bands playing there and these guys played to 15,000 in Queenstown last year so it would be great to match that,” Mr Thawley said. And while a playlist including Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising and Lookin’ Out My Back Door, will hum across Taranaki’s famous open air venue, Mr Thawley promised there was more to come.- stuff.co.nz

Jimmy Christmas likes New Plymouth so much his band planned their latest tour around it.
“We played at Butlers Reef at New Year and it was pretty amazing. There was a great crowd, so we wanted to make sure we came back for a Saturday night gig,” Christmas says.
The frontman of rock band Luger Boa says the group love performing live.
They hit the road with opening band Black River Drive and will perform in Taranaki on July 30.
“We have a responsibility to go out on the road and give something special. We’re not a band that just plays their record. We want it to be more exciting, overwhelming – a sensory experience.”
Since their last album release more than two years ago, they have opened for Kings of Leon, cranked up their airplay on radio and toured the country.
How successful have they been then?
“Depends how you define success. It’s a great achievement to make a second album. And to have a band that’s tight and together – personalities are always a consideration and we’ve cracked that. Plus we’ve got an exciting live act.”
He says this could be the band’s last national tour, as they try and crack the international market.
Think Australia, Europe, Japan and the United States.
The key is knowing what you’re trying to achieve, he says.
One song he tips to be of good value is the new single The Same Things, which has been a crowd favourite already.
“You know it’s good when they’ve only heard it once before and it has the power to move an audience.”
While he hopes the Taranaki crowds will be receptive, he’s also hanging out to hit the surf here, which he’s never experienced.
“I’ve got a new warm wetsuit, I might have to give it a crack. So if there’s anybody out there who wants to take me for a wave or point me in the right direction let me know.”
Luger Boa and Black River Drive play Butlers Reef, Saturday July 30 at 8pm. Pre-sale tickets $20, door sales $25.

New Plymouth’s Singers Songwriters group will celebrate its sixth birthday tonight night.
The group meets on the last Friday of each month at the New Plymouth Little Theatre.
Founder Anand Rose said he got the idea from a similar event he used to attend in Dublin and the group’s aim was to encourage and nurture local musicians.
“It’s to facilitate the growth of the Taranaki music scene,” Mr Rose said. “Allowing musicians to improve, no matter what standard they are at.”
Mr Rose said artists were limited to one song a night and there were up to 20 performances.
“There’s a team of up to 10 people who make it possible.”
He was looking forward to many more years with the group.
Newcomer David Calder said he was thrilled to be performing at the birthday bash. “It is a real privilege to be among these enthusiasts for acoustic and folk music in Taranaki,” he said.
Doors open at 7pm tonight and the music will start about 8pm

CHRIS SKELTON/The Dominion Post |
A busker who gave a scorching live performance to an audience of two in Lambton Quay was “awestruck” to find one of them was rocker George Thorogood – who was so impressed he gave the guitarist free tickets to his concert.
Joe Murphy, 19, of Tawa, was playing in his regular spot outside Whitcoulls on Tuesday when two men stopped to listen.
He strummed BB King’s The Thrill is Gone and Santana’s Black Magic Woman before one of the men approached him.
“He came up and said, ‘Hi, I’m George Thorogood,’ and I said, ‘Hi, I’m Joe, how’s it going?’.
“He said, ‘Do you know who I am?’ and I said, ‘No’, then he said, ‘We play that song Bad to the Bone.”‘
Blues rocker Thorogood complimented him on his musicianship and asked why he was playing in the street. The former New Zealand School of Music student replied that it was hard to make a living as a musician.
Thorogood then invited him to the Wellington concert he was playing with Joe Cocker that night, handed him an American dollar bill and strolled off, along with his minder.

George Thorogood |
“He was pretty chilled out. I didn’t know who he was, but I knew he was either rich or famous or both, because they have that kind of swagger about them,” Mr Murphy said.
“They were listening quite intently, which is cool – not many people stop by and actually take the time. I was stoked that anyone would do that, but it was pretty awesome that it was George Thorogood.”
Dad John Murphy, who was the lucky recipient of the second ticket, thought it hilarious his son did not recognise the 60-year-old rocker, who has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
John Murphy said: “When I got home he said, ‘Dad, this guy supported Santana, he’s huge!”‘
George Thorogood and Joe Cocker are set to play the Bowl of Brooklands, here in New Plymouth on Friday the 28th of January. So if your a busker and want a free tickets I would suggest One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer or you can leave your hat on.

Taylor Swift rumored to play at the bowl |
Taranaki is set to have several international A-list artists perform at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands over the next three years. The New Plymouth District Council has an agreement with promoter Andrew McManus, who brought Fleetwood Mac in December 2009, to have six events featuring A-list artists between now and the end of 2013.
While Ms Thurston would not be drawn on which artists could perform in New Plymouth, there are several options for summer 2011.
One potential artist is American country singer Taylor Swift who announced she would perform in New Zealand at the end of the year as part of her world wide tour.

R.E.M. Might play at the Bowl |
Other possible performers are R.E.M, Coldplay and Radiohead, who are all set to release albums this year.
Mr McManus has signed on with the council following the success of the two Fleetwood Mac shows.
Each concert will be exclusive to Taranaki, with the solo artist or band playing no other North Island shows while in New Zealand.
Andrew McManus Presents promotes artists such as ZZ Top, Chris Isaak, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Jethro Tull, Kelly Clarkson, Snoop Dog, Korn and Guns N Roses.
