Shred favorite’s Conditions started the year with the news we’d all been waiting for; the band had finally signed on the dotted line with a label. After many offers and much speculation the guys joined Good Fight Music, a new independent label owned and run by Ferret Music owners Carl Severson and Paul Conroy. And after dropping that bombshell it seemed the good news just kept coming.
Not ones to conform to the ’scenes’ of modern music, Conditions strive to create music the good old fashioned way: with heart, honesty, integrity and – most of all- with real instruments! The band aren’t ones to hide their dislike of self-labeled ‘musicians’ who are anything but. Conditions recordings and live shows have been highly praised by their fellow artists as well as by the critics – back in 2008 the band Paramore invited them to open their UK tour alongside New Found Glory and Kids in Glass Houses, and popcore band A Day To Remember have even been known to express their support of the guys

Nashville indie rockers Paper Route also made a successful year out of 2009; in April they released their major label debut Absence on Universal Records – which reached 13# on the Billboard heatseekers chart – and in December they finished the year in spectacular fashion by supporting Paramore on their UK Brand New Eyes Tour. Of course, much else also happened in between!

Now, Now Every Children
Minneapolis duo Now, Now Every Children may not have a tour or new record scheduled for 2010 as of yet but you can bet your bottom dollar that it’ll still be an exciting year for the pair and their fans. It was late last year that many of us were introduced to their catchy, indie-rock when they opened for platinum selling band Paramore on their UK/European tour, where they received an overwhelmingly positive response resulting in pleads for them to return and a fantastic fan website (www.nownoweverychildren.net/). Currently in the demo stages of their follow-up to popular debut Cars the band are playing shows around their hometown to keep themselves busy. Keep an eye on these two, you never quite know whats going to happen next.

Intergalactic star Lights went from strength to strength back in 2009, starting out the year with a Juno Award for Best New Artist (previous recipients include Nelly Furtado and Avril Lavigne) and ending it on a high with the release of her debut album The Listening. Jump to the present and the young Canadian has once again been nominated for a Juno Award, this year in the ‘Pop Album of the Year’ category alongside Michael Buble and Justin Bieber. Currently on tour with chart sensation Owl City for five months (January – May 2010) followed by a brief tour of the UK, Lights travels mean you have no excuse not to make it out to a show, unless of course – like many – they’re already sold out! 2010 is going to be a big year for the rather little Canadian artist.

Another of 2010’s early breakthrough artists, Marina & The Diamonds was already dominating the charts in the UK with her debut album The Family Jewels and infectious first single ‘Hollywood’. The glamorous Welsh star may come second to fellow artist Ellie Goulding in some critics eyes – Diamandis came runner up to Goulding in both the BBC Sound Poll and Brit Awards – but to her loyal fans, also referred to as her ‘Diamonds’, she will always be number one. Luckily for Diamandis her ‘Diamonds’ can be found across the world and aren’t quite so difficult to find, so much so that her entire first headlining tour sold out before the release of The Family Jewels meaning her shows across Europe and United States will be packed full of treasure. For those impatient to hear new material from the 24-year old- fear not, the singer has been working with producer of the moment Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Britney Spears) in LA and has dropped hints that she may release an extended edition of her debut album, similar to Lady Gaga’s re-release of Fame Monster.

The Swellers
Back in 09′ the punk outfit became better known worldwide when they signed to indie label Fueled By Ramen and released their fourth full-length Ups And Downsizing to universal acclaim. Being no strangers to touring – “We tour because we’re not good at anything else. We love our songs and want to play them all night and see our friends, so we go on tour” – the band impressed concertgoers when they opened for label-mates Paramore and toured with the likes of Set Your Goals and Less Than Jake. In 2010 the boys are stepping it up a notch as they join the Give It A Name Introduces Tour (which brought the UK Lights and Versaemerge in 09′) across the UK and Europe as well as a three-week stint on the legendary Vans Warped Tour. The live environment is where The Swellers belong, it’s where both the music and band come to life, so I strongly suggest you make your way over to see them before they start selling out venues!

The Rocket Summer
Bryce Avary started off the year with a bang as he released the highly anticipated new album, Of Men and Angels which deservedly reached the top spot at 1# in the itunes chart. To accompany the new record Avary will be on the road for the majority of the year having already booked shows up until the end of August! Not only is he touring the states with chart toppers One Republic AND legendary rock group The Goo Goo Dolls but he’s also confirmed to play Slamdunk festival in the UK – as well as a handful of headlining shows – and the whole of this years Vans Warped Tour. An incredible feat for any artist but there’s no doubt that hardworking TRS will add more tour dates as the year goes on. 2010 looks set to be a good year for TRS.

Azriel
Shred favorites Azriel ended 09′ on a high as they joined music management group The Artery Foundation, being one of the first UK bands to do so. Even after a relentless touring schedule last year it seems that the boys had enough in them for one more European tour supporting US band For The Fallen Dreams in March before they head into the studio to record their brand new album; slated for release later this year. The teaser of some new songs with demos on their myspace page and at live shows have got people seriously excited to hear what comes next from the melodic metalcore five-piece.

2009 seemed to be a huge year for female fronted bands, with the likes of Paramore finally blowing up in terms of worldwide popularity and with VersaEmerge slowly but surely carving their very own path to the top. Formerly a five piece, VE lost two members over the course of the year – Anthony Martone (Drums) and Jerry Pierce (Guitar) – both due to personal reasons, yet the group continued and have come back strong ready to drop their highly anticipated debut album this summer. According to a couple of tweets, Chris Pollock is currently filling in as the drummer for the band. It has not been announced whether this is permanent or temporary.
Their experimental-style melodies teamed with Sierra Kusterbeck (Vocals) and Blake Harnage’s (Guitar/Vocals) almost classical style vocals have meant that critics are keeping a close eye on the band. Whilst some simply pass them off as ‘copycats’, most seem to have noticed that VE’s unique musical creations place them well above the average band of today, their dedication and professionalism have earned them much respect
Fixed At Zero Album is set to drop June 22nd

Ellie Goulding
23 year old Ellie Goulding has already achieved in 2010 what most artists struggle to achieve in a lifetime. Having won the prestigious BBC Sound of 2010 poll Goulding went on to win the critics choice Brit Award in February before her debut album had even been released. The ten-track full length Lights went straight into the UK chart at number one when it was released this March, knocking Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster from the top spot. Currently on tour with rockers Passion Pit, Goulding embarks on a UK headlining tour this March/April and has been confirmed for this years V-festival in August. Most of the upbeat pop-artists shows have sold out so be sure to get your hands on a pair of tickets next time she comes to a venue near you
